Gardenos Beach is a picturesque, wide sandy beach on the south-west coast of Corfu, surrounded by low, dramatic cliffs and lush green vegetation.
It stretches for almost 2 kilometres and forms part of a longer sandy coastline that continues south towards the more secluded Megali Lakka.
Together, the two beaches form an almost continuous stretch of around 3 kilometres.
Gardenos Location
Gardenos Beach is located near the traditional village of Vitalades, on the south-west coast of Corfu, away from the busiest tourist resorts of the island.
Vitalades is a small traditional village surrounded by olive groves and green hills, with the sea just a couple of kilometres away.
The road to Gardenos passes through the village before descending towards the coast.
Gardenos is also close to the southern part of Corfu, with Lefkimmi and Kavos further to the south.
Is Gardenos Popular?
Gardenos is nothing like Glyfada or Paleokastritsa, which can be busy throughout the main season in Corfu, from May to October.
Even in August, Gardenos is usually not crowded, with plenty of room on the sand and quieter, more secluded areas if you walk farther along the beach.
The main entrance area is the most developed part of the beach, with sunbeds, umbrellas and a few places to eat.
But walk a few minutes along the shore and the atmosphere changes completely, with long stretches of open sand, cliffs and vegetation.
Gardenos Beach is an ideal destination for those looking for peace, tranquillity and a more natural side of Corfu.
What is Gardenos Beach like?
Gardenos is a wide golden-sand beach stretching for almost 2 kilometres, with clear, shallow waters and plenty of open space.
The seabed slopes gently into the sea, so Gardenos Beach is particularly comfortable for swimming and suitable for families with children or people who cannot swim.
The main entrance to the beach has an organised section with sunbeds and umbrellas, but much of the coastline is free and open.
The combination of golden sand, clear blue water and pale cliffs covered with lush green vegetation creates a fairy-tale-like atmosphere.
Farther along the beach, the surroundings become even quieter and wilder.
All this creates a feeling that Gardenos is much more remote from the noisy world than its relatively easy access might suggest.
Fresh Seafood & Ouzo
Although Gardenos is far from being a fully developed resort, you will find places to eat near the main entrance to the beach.
The seaside tavernas in Gardenos serve very good food, including fresh fish, squid, octopus, shrimps and sardines.
If you are not into seafood, you may enjoy quality traditional Greek and Corfiot dishes like pastitsada and sofrito.
Finishing a beach day with fresh local seafood and a glass of ouzo sounds like a perfect way to spend a summer day in southern Corfu.
And if you stay until the evening, the sunset from Gardenos is spectacular.
Facing west over the Ionian Sea, the beach offers an unobstructed view towards the setting sun.
Natural Clay Deposits
Gardenos Beach has one additional feature.
Walk towards the quieter end of Gardenos, to the right of the main beach entrance, and you will find pale cliffs containing natural clay-rich deposits.
This clay material is made up of extremely fine mineral particles, which may benefit the skin.
Traditionally, visitors to Gardenos collected some of the wet clay from the exposed deposits and used it as a simple natural mud treatment, applying it to their skin before washing it off in the sea.
